Virtual Desktop Data Protection & Disaster Recovery (VDI) is revolutionising the way desktop systems are deployed and managed. Using VDI, individual client desktops, like Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista or Linux, are deployed as virtual machines on an industry standard virtualisation platform. The intent is to be able to deploy, secure and manage enterprise desktops in the data center.
Users then use thin clients or repurposed desktop PCs to access their desktops.
Benefits of desktop virtualisation include:

Reduced cost in purchasing desktop computers, as thin clients often last two to three times longer than a desktop computer |

Rapid provisioning of new desktops |

Reduction in electricity costs, as thin client computers use only a fraction of amount of energy that is used by a desktop computer |

Reduction in desktop support costs |
